That’s the Turbo Studie, a 1971 concept car with a 2002 Turbo engine. The M1 was obvisouly based on that, but it looks a bit different! Really quite cool

By Paul Bracq, a wonderful car designer that should be better known. The Turbo was commissioned by BMW to celebrate the ‘72 Olympic Games. Bringing back the Games after Berlin 1936 was a big deal for Germany so I supposed BMW wanted to do their bit.

The general appearance of the M1 , designed by Giugiaro (with a chassis engineered by Lamborghini, who were also supposed to build them) owes a lot to the Turbo.

Clemsie, you lucky _____ ! (expletive deleted)

Funny, just thought about it... that Brabham has something in common with the Turbo Studie... like the engine block!

Fascinating thing, the engine of that Brabham, isn’t it? 1200bhp out of a small four pot...

And yeah, I’m a lucky bastard! But I like to share, so full post on that event is incoming :)

Well, 1,200bhp was the max power in qualifying spec (with the wastegate welded shut, if I remember correctly). They were called “grenade” engines for a reason! I think the team used to go through four or five engines – just for the qualification rounds.

That meant engine wizard Rosche and his minions having to scour the scrappies for properly seasoned M10 blocks, at least at first.

Thanks for sharing your pictures, by the way.
